Tips for Bicycle Safety

  • Ride in bike lanes when available
  • Ride with traffic
  • Obey traffic signs, signals and lane markings
  • Walk your bike across the street in crosswalks when available
  • Use hand signals for turns and stops
  • No headphones
  • Wear bright colored clothing
  • Watch out for loose pant legs and shoe laces that can get caught in the bike chain
  • Wear a helmet
    • Snug fit when placed on your head
    • Sit even on your head with one or two fingers width above your eyebrow
    • Straps should be tightened leaving a “v” shape formed just below the ear lobe
    • Tighten chin strap so that no more than one or two fingers fit under the strap
    • Helmet should not move forward, backward or to either side when buckled
