Know Your Body Mass Index (BMI) Numbers

What is BMI? BMI stands for Body Mass Index. BMI uses your height and weight to estimate how much body fat you have.

  • If BMI is:

Less than 18.5

Underweight

Between 18.5 and 25

Normal weight

Between 25 and 29.9

Overweight

30 or more

Obese

Your doctor can help you to find your BMI

Being overweight or obese could lead to: 

  • Heart disease.
  • Stroke.
  • Breathing problems.
  • High blood pressure.
  • High blood glucose (sugar).
  • High LDL (bad) cholesterol and low HDL (good) cholesterol.
  • Increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Body pain

What can I do?

  • Get regular physical activity.
  • Stop smoking or using tobacco products.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables at every meal
  • Talk to your doctor about losing weight.
