How do I know if I have high blood pressure?

  • Ask your doctor or health care worker to check your blood pressure.
  • Have your blood pressure checked regularly.
  • You may not have any signs or symptoms.
  • If you have diabetes, you are at risk of high blood pressure.

What do the numbers mean?

Systolic – measures pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats.

Diastolic – measures the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart rests between beats.

Normal

            Less than  120

            Less than  80

 

At Risk

                120 - 130

                 80 - 89                  

 

High

                  140 +              

                   90 +

What can I do if I have high blood pressure?

  • Stop smoking or using tobacco products.
  • Be active
  • Eat healthy
    • Fresh fruits and vegetables
    • Use less salt or use other seasonings.

Some medical conditions can raise your risk for high blood pressure.

Follow your doctor’s orders.  If prescribed medication, take as directed.
